If you’ve never worked remotely and will be using your personal computer, follow these steps to prepare. Don’t forget to do a test-run to make sure your equipment works as expected. Remember, even though you’re working remotely, you’re not alone. If you need help, contact the Service Desk or visit https://support.bowdoin.edu
- Identify the computer that you will use to work remotely
Make sure it’s in good working order and securely connected to the Internet.
- Be sure you are familiar with docking and un-docking your Bowdoin-issued laptop
- Test working with your laptop outside of the docking station to make sure everything is working correctly.
- Ensure that your personal computer is updated and secure
If you don’t have a Bowdoin-issued laptop, you’ll need to take extra steps to make sure your work stays secure.
Follow Bowdoin's Personal Device Security Guidelines for MacOS and Windows 10
- Set up a device that you have access to remotely for two-step verification
You won’t be able to verify your identity from your office phone if you’re not there.
Learn how to add additional devices for two-step verification.
- Install and test VPN
Some applications and network drives can only be accessed off campus via virtual private network (VPN).
Learn how to install VPN and how to use VPN.
- Locate the peripherals you’ll need to be productive remotely
Think about calling into meetings or video conferencing. Does your computer have a built-in microphone and speaker? Do you need a headset for your phone? Does your laptop have a working webcam?
- Gather everything else you’ll need to be productive
Make sure you have any important work files or equipment, like power adapters, that you’ll need to bring home from the office.
- Test your home Internet service
Ensure that your home Internet service is working correctly. If there are multiple people who may use the Internet at the same time, ensure that you have adequate speeds to possibly support multiple devices using and streaming over the Internet at the same time.
We recommend at least 25 Mb download speeds speed per-person working/learning from home and at least 2 Mb upload speed to help when needing to upload documents to network file services. These will allow for a more stable video/voice conference experience as well as provide adequate speeds for Microsoft 365 and other online tools.
