How to Install GigSky eSIM for International Cellular Data

Issue/Question

  • I have been approved to request access to cellular data on my iPad and am living internationally, how do I activate the service?
  • How do I install the GigSky eSIM file that was sent to me by IT for cellular data on my iPad?

Environment

While students are continuing to take classes from home, the college is assisting some students to be able to access the Internet by enabling the cellular connection on their iPads. International students are unable to use the college's primary cellular carrier networks and need an alternative option.

We offer a solution through a partnership with GigSky to provide cellular access to most countries, as needed by request. When GigSky access has been approved, a file with a QR code will be emailed to the student and the iPad must be configured to use the QR code on the document in order to enroll in GigSky. 

Resolution

Once you receive an email with the GigSky document, follow these steps to start your GigSky service.

  • You will need 2 devices and/or have the ability to print the email that gets sent to you as you will need to scan the QR code with the iPad's camera
  • Go to Settings
  • Select Cellular Data
  • Choose Other... from the list (note that while GigSky is in the list, we will not be using that option).
  • Scan the QR code from the email attachment that was sent to you. This will install the special eSIM.
  • Once installed, select the newly installed eSIM (should say something similar to "GigSky - North American Plan" or something similar
  • You can turn on Cellular Data by tapping on the Cellular Data slider.
