How to print to a PolarPrint printer

There are 3 ways to print to a PolarPrint printer

1. Print to PolarPrint by email

By sending an email from your Bowdoin email address to one of a few special email addresses, either the email itself or the attachment(s) will be available to print from any PolarPrint release station on campus. The following steps will help guide you through this process.

  1. Decide how you want your print job to appear in order to select the correct email address. 
    • If you want your print job to be printed in black and white and on both sides of the page, you will send your email to PolarPrint@bowdoin.edu
    • If you want your print job to be printed in color and on one side of the page, you will send your email to PolarPrintColor@bowdoin.edu
    • If you want your print job to be printed in black and white and on only a single side of the page, send your email to PolarPrintSingle@bowdoin.edu
  2. Decide what you want to print 
    • PolarPrint will queue up to 10 attachments per email when a message is sent to any of the above addresses
    • If there are no attachments, PolarPrint will queue the email itself to be printed
  3. Ensure your print job is in the right format 
    • PolarPrint can print documents of the following application filetypes 
      • PDF (.pdf)
      • Word Documents (.docx, .doc, .rtf, .dot)
      • Excel Documents (.xslx, .xls, .xlt, .xltx, .xltm, .xlsm, .csv)
      • Powerpoint Documents (.pptx, .ppt, .pptm, .pot, .pps, .potx, .ppsx)
      • Visio Documents (.vsd, .vss, .vst, .vdx, .vsx, .vtx, .vdw)
      • Images (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, .gif)
      • Text Documents (.txt, .mht, .eml)
      • OpenOffice Documents (.odt, .ods, .odp)
      • Publisher Documents (.pub)
      • An email message
         
  4. When ready, send your print job(s) to any of the above email addresses.
  5. You will receive an email reply from PolarPrint letting you know that your document has been received and ready for release
  6. Approach any PolarPrint printer on campus. Depending on the type of printer, you will have one or two ways to release or print your document(s).
    1. The preferred way is to release your print job from either the Pharos Mobile app or from the Print Center website. For thorough instructions, visit the knowledge base article covering this topic.
    2. The other option is via a release station. Some printers have release station software built-in (printers in the basement of Hwathorne-Longfellow, for example). Approach the printer and look for a swipe card reader and swipe your OneCard ID. Once you swipe and it logs you in, select your the document(s) you want to print, and tap print. If you need to, when you select the job it will tell you the total cost in the lower-left corner and you won't be debited until the job is actually released and printed. 

Additional Notes:

  1. If you emailed a the color address but you release your print job at a black and white printer, the print job will only be in black and white but you will also only be charged the black and white price
  2. If your email to PolarPrint also includes images in your signature, those are looked as attachments and will appear in the PolarPrint queue. These can be ignored and not printed, they will auto-delete in a couple of hours
  3. The name of the print job that appears in Print Center or a Print Release Station will be the name of the document sent.
  4. If you are expecting to print just an email (with no attachment(s)), the name of the job will be the subject line of the email.

At a release station, you will not see your name next to your print jobs, the string of numbers next to each print job is actually part of your OneCard ID number and is not easily known/memorized so be sure to look for your document name to identify the print job.

2. Upload to the Pharos Print App

You can submit and release print jobs from your iPad or other mobile device through the Pharos Print app. 

Download the Pharos Print app from your device's app store. You can download the app for your iPad from the Self Service app on your device or by clicking this link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pharos-print/id918145672

Configure the app and log in

You will need to configure the app before you can log in.

  1. Once downloaded, at the login screen, tap on the gear icon. You will have two fields to fill in. Complete them as follows:
    1. Server: printcenter.bowdoin.edu​​​​​​
    2. Port: 443
  2. Click Connect to go back to the login page.
  3. Enter your Bowdoin username and Bowdoin password and tap Log On
     
  4. Once logged in, you can upload and print your documents very similarly as with the website.

3. Upload to the Print Center Website

PolarPrint's PrintCenter is a site that allows you to upload your print jobs from any web browser, including from an iPad, most smart phones, laptop or desktop computer

You can access PrintCenter from on campus at https://printcenter.bowdoin.edu.

You can submit documents to PrintCenter by following these steps:

  1. Log in to PrintCenter with your Bowdoin username and password
     
  2. Click the Upload button in the menu bar
  3. Choose a document to upload from your files. If you are on an iPad, you can browse through either the local Files directory, or enable the ability to view OneDrive, DropBox, Box, etc. depending on what apps you have installed on your device.
  4. Once uploaded, your document will show up in the list with the word "Processing" next to it. As soon as the document is done processing, you will be allowed to release the print job at a PolarPrint printer of your choice, using this same website.
