How to correct an MDM enrollment issue on a Bowdoin-issued iPad

Environment

Bowdoin-issued iPads are usually automatically enrolled in the Jamf MDM solution used to manage and maintain all Bowdoin iPads. Sometimes, an iPad may not be enrolled during the initial setup, affecting both student and faculty iPads.

Resolution

The fix requires coordination with the Service Desk. You can contact them by phone from 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM EST, Monday - Friday, at (207) 725-3030.

Step 1: Backup your iPad

Before proceeding, back up your iPad to save any important data. This process involves erasing the iPad completely. You can back up your iPad to iCloud or to your computer via iTunes.

To back up to iCloud:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on your Apple ID at the top.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Scroll down the list under the heading of "APPS USING ICLOUD" and at the bottom of the list, tap Show All.
  5. Turn on apps and features you want to back up.
  6. Click the <iCloud text in upper left of window.
  7. Under "DEVICE BACKUPS" click iCloud Backup and turn on Back Up This iPad or choose Backup Now.

Step 2: Contact the Service Desk to erase your iPad

you can erase your iPad yourself, a step in the process requires entering the college-tied email address and password. It's more efficient to contact the Service Desk for a remote wipe with an activation unlock.

  1. Call the Service Desk and request a remote wipe with an activation unlock.
  2. Ensure iPad is connected to wireless for the process to take place.

Step 3: Follow the prompts for setup

After the iPad is erased, it will return to the initial setup screen.

  1. Set up your iPad again.
  2. Log in with your Bowdoin username and password.
  3. Restore from the backup you created Step 1 when prompted.
