Description
This article provides instructions to repair an update automatically delivered by CrowdStrike, our antivirus software, that caused some Windows computers to crash with a "Blue Screen of Death".
Environment
Only Windows computers that received the CrowdStrike update would be affected. Your computer may be displaying a blue screen titled "Automatic Repair".
Resolution
1. If your computer is already displaying a blue Automatic Repair screen, jump to step 2.
- Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
- Press the power button again to turn on your device.
- On the first sign that Windows has started (for example, a spinning circle below the Dell logo) hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
- Press the power button again to turn on your device.
- When Windows starts again, hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
- Press the power button again to turn on your device.
- This time, allow your device to fully start up.
2. Select Advanced options.
3. Select Troubleshoot
4. Select Advanced options
5. Select Command Promt.
6. Use another computer or smartphone to look up your computer’s recovery key using the Service - Tool: Windows BitLocker Key... (teamdynamix.com) lookup tool and the Recovery Key ID displayed on the computer (circled in red).
7. Enter the 48 digit recovery key you looked up and press Continue. A black Command Prompt window will open.
8. Type the following lines in the command prompt window that opens.
c: (press enter)
del c:\windows\system32\drivers\crowdstrike\c-00000291*.sys (press enter)
9. Close the Command Window
10. Turn off your PC
11. Your computer will boot and function normally when it is restarted.
