Environment
This guide is for anyone using Microsoft Teams to collaborate within an organization. It’s especially useful for team owners and administrators who need to manage access and permissions for different types of channels in private teams.
Resolution
Step 1: Understand the Types of Channels
- Standard Channels: Open to all team members. Files in the channel and anything posted here are visible and searchable by everyone in the team.
- Private Channels: Restricted to specific members within the team. Only invited members can see files and participate in these channels.
- Shared Channels: Designed for collaboration with people both inside and outside your organization. Only team members and those invited can access these channels and the files.
For more information see: Standard, private, or shared channels in Microsoft Teams
Step 2: Manage Channel Settings
- Access Channel Settings: Go to the team name, click on “More options” (the three dots), and select “Manage team”. Then, go to the “Settings” tab.
- Adjust Permissions: In the “Settings” tab, you can control what members and guests can do. For example, you can allow or restrict the ability to create new channels, add apps, or use @mentions.
For more information see: Manage team settings and permissions in Microsoft Teams
Step 3: Communicate Permissions to Your Team
- Inform Members: Make sure everyone knows their role and what they can and cannot do. Clear communication helps prevent confusion and ensures smooth collaboration.
