This article applies to all current Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff who have successfully signed in to their Bowdoin account through Okta but are still unable to access a specific web page or service. Common examples include Microsoft 365 applications, SharePoint sites, Canvas, internal Bowdoin portals, and other authenticated web resources.

Resolution

Work through the steps below in order. Many access issues are resolved by step 3 or 4.

  1. Check whether you have permission to access this resource.
    Being signed in does not guarantee access to all Bowdoin resources. Some pages, SharePoint sites, and services are restricted to specific roles — for example, faculty only, specific departments, or enrolled students in a particular course. If you received the link from someone else, confirm with them that you should have access before troubleshooting further.
  2. Verify you are using the correct URL.
    Double-check the web address you are trying to open. Some resources have similar names, and you may have a link to a page you are not authorized for, or a URL that has changed. Try navigating to the resource from an official starting point — such as from your Okta dashboard, Canvas, or the Bowdoin portal — rather than from a saved bookmark or a link in an old email.
  3. Try opening the page in a private or incognito window.
    Cached credentials and browser extensions can sometimes interfere with authentication. Open a private/incognito window, sign in fresh, and try the page again:
    • Chrome: Command + Shift + N (macOS) or Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows)
    • Safari: Command + Shift + N
    • Firefox: Command + Shift + P (macOS) or Ctrl + Shift + P (Windows)
    • Edge: Ctrl + Shift + N
  4. Clear your browser's cache and cookies.
    Stale cached data can cause sign-in loops and access errors. Clear your cache and cookies, then close and reopen your browser completely before trying again. In most browsers: SettingsPrivacy or HistoryClear browsing data. Make sure to select both Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
  5. Try a different browser.
    If the issue occurs in one browser, test with a different one — for example, switch from Safari to Chrome, or from Chrome to Firefox. This helps rule out browser-specific settings or extension conflicts.
  6. Check whether the content is time-sensitive.
    Some Bowdoin resources are only available during specific time windows — for example, course materials, event registrations, or shared links with expiration dates. If you believe the content may be time-limited, contact the person who shared the link to confirm it is still active and accessible.
  7. Make sure your Bowdoin account is in good standing.
    If your account is new, recently reactivated, or if your role changed recently (e.g., student to alumni, or new employee), permissions may take time to propagate. Wait a few minutes, then try again. If you recently changed your password, sign out of your browser completely and sign back in before retrying.
