Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin College students, faculty, and staff who need a large-format poster printed by the campus Copy and Print Center. It covers preparing your file (from Windows or macOS) using common tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Adobe apps, and submitting the file through the Copy and Print Center’s request process as described on the Bowdoin website.

Resolution

Posters can be printed by the Bowdoin Copy and Print Center.

  1. Plan your poster size and deadline
    • Confirm the required size and orientation (portrait or landscape) for your class, event, or conference.
    • Allow enough lead time; larger posters and busy periods can require additional time to print.
  2. Set the page size in your design app before you start
    • PowerPoint: Change the slide size to your final poster dimensions before adding content. See Microsoft’s guide to change slide size.
    • Google Slides: Adjust Page setup to a Custom size that matches your poster. Learn more in the Google Slides Help Center.
    • Using other tools (e.g., Illustrator, InDesign): Create the document at full size to avoid scaling.
  3. Use clear, high-quality content
    • Images should be high resolution so they do not look blurry when printed large. Avoid screenshots when possible.
    • Keep text large and readable from a distance; use strong color contrast for accessibility.
  4. Export your poster to PDF
    • From PowerPoint or other apps, export or Save As PDF to preserve layout and fonts. See Microsoft’s guide to save or convert to PDF.
    • From Google Slides, use File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf).
    • Open the PDF and zoom in to check that images and text look sharp at full size.
  5. Prepare submission details
    • File name: Include your name, project/course, and poster size (for example: “A_Smith_BioResearch_36x48.pdf”).
    • Printing details: Size, color (color or black and white), paper preference (e.g., matte or gloss if offered), quantity, and your deadline.
    • Billing details: Include any required project or department information if applicable.
    • Delivery: Note if you prefer pickup or campus delivery if available.
  6. Submit your poster through the CopyShop page on the Bowdoin website
    • Go to the Copy and Print Center's website to submit your request and upload your PDF per the on-page instructions. Click the Submit a print job button and log in with your Bowdoin username and password.
    • Provide all details from the previous step in the request form so the job can be printed correctly the first time.
  7. Receive your printed poster
    • Pick up your poster or receive delivery according to the options shown on the Copy Shop page. Carefully transport the poster in a tube or flat to avoid damage.
    • If you need changes, export a corrected PDF and submit a new request per the same process.
