Captioning Videos Using Panopto's Automatic Captioning Service

Summary

Using the Panopto media server, captions are created automatically when a video is uploaded. Captions can be created in a number of languages.

Viewing captions in the Panopto player

When viewing a video in Panopto captions can be accessed from the left hand menu of the Panopto player in the Captions section. These captions are timed stamped and allow for accessing the video at certain points by clicking on the captions themselves.

Captions can also be enabled to play over the video by selecting the CC icon in the bottom right of the Panopto player window.

Changing the language for caption creation

Panopto can create captions for videos in the following languages:

  • English (United States, United Kingdom, Australia)
  • Chinese (Simplified, Traditional)
  • Spanish (Mexico, Spain) 
  • German 
  • French
  • Dutch 
  • Thai
  • Korean
  • Japanese 
  • Russian 
  • Portuguese 
  • Polish
  • Danish
  • Finnish
  • Hungarian 
  • Norwegian
  • Swedish
  • Italian 

In order to caption your video in a language that is not US English (the default language in Panopto) follow these instructions:

  1. In your Panopto account create a new folder in the location of your choice.
  2. Open the Folder Settings to the folder you created.
  3. From the left hand menu choose Settings.
  4. Select your desired language from the Content Language drop down menu.

Any new content that you upload to this folder will be captioned in the chosen language. Captions will not be created for content that is copied into this folder from another Panopto folder.
