Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin faculty, staff, and students scanning documents using a PaperCut-enabled multi-function device (MFD) on campus. The advanced options described here are available on all campus MFDs, though some settings may not be available for every scan destination. For example, scanning to OneDrive supports PDF only — other file types are not available for that destination.

Scan multiple pages into one document

By default, PaperCut sends your scan as soon as you tap Start. If you are using the scanner glass - rather than the document feeder - and need to scan multiple pages into a single file, use the Prompt for more pages option.

  1. Sign in at the MFD. Tap your Bowdoin OneCard ID on the card reader, or enter your Bowdoin username and password on the touch screen.

  2. Tap Scan, then choose your scan destination.

  3. On the scan destination screen, check the box next to Prompt for more pages at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Place your first page on the scanner glass and tap Start Scanning.

  5. After each page scans, a screen will appear with three options:

    • Scan more pages — place the next page on the glass and tap this to add it to the same document
    • Scan new document — start a new, separate document in the same job
    • Finish and send — complete the scan and deliver all documents to your destination

You can also wait for the countdown timer to expire, which will automatically finish and send.

Watch for blank pages: If any page in your stack is blank, PaperCut may automatically split the document at that point — even when using Prompt for more pages. This is because PaperCut's global blank-page splitting setting takes priority. If your document ends up split unexpectedly, you can combine the resulting files using macOS Preview or Adobe Acrobat.

Change scan settings

You can adjust scan settings - such as two-sided scanning, file type, DPI, and color mode - before starting a scan by tapping Settings on the scan destination screen.

  1. Sign in at the MFD and tap Scan, then choose your scan destination.

  2. Tap the Settings button on the right side of the screen.

  3. On the Scan Settings screen, adjust the settings you need:

    • Duplex mode - choose 1-sided or 2-sided scanning
    • Paper size - select a specific size, or use Auto to let the scanner detect it
    • Orientation - portrait or landscape (the scanner does not auto-detect this)
    • File type - PDF (default), JPEG, or TIFF
    • DPI - resolution from 100 to 600 DPI; higher DPI produces larger files
    • Color mode - black and white (default), grayscale, or color

  4. Tap Start Scanning when you are ready.

Not all settings are available for every destination. For example, scanning to OneDrive only supports PDF — the file type setting will have no effect for that destination. If a setting appears grayed out, it is not available for your current scan destination.
