Returning Bowdoin-issued Student Laptop

Issue/Question

  • I am transferring away from Bowdoin. How can I return my Bowdoin-issued laptop?
  • I am not returning to Bowdoin, what do I need to do to return my laptop to the college?

Environment

Bowdoin students may keep their college-issued laptops upon successful graduation. However, if a student leaves the college before graduating, the laptop must be reset and returned to the IT department with all accessories.

Resolution

Each lapop must be in good condition, be reset and then returned to Information Technology with all peripherals, including charger and USB-C charging cable. The steps below will outline the tasks that need to be completed before the laptop is returned. Once the reset procedure has taken place, all items should be packaged well and shipped to the address below.

Reset Procedures

Each laptop must be reset before being returned, following the outline of steps below. If you have difficulty following these steps, please contact the Service Desk for assistance.

  1. Sign out of iCloud on the device (if applicable)
    • Click on the  and System Settings. Click on your Apple ID at the top of the page.
    • Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out
    • You may be asked to keep copies of data local. You can simply choose "Keep copy". The computer will be erased once received by IT.
  2. Erase all Content and Settings
    • Click on the  and System Settings
    • Tap General
    • Scroll down and click Transfer or Reset
    • Click Erase All Content and Settings...
    • Follow any on-screen prompts to finalize the erase.
    • If done correctly, the laptop will restart itself.

Shipping the Laptop

If you left Bowdoin before dropping off the technology, you will need to ship the item(s) back to campus.

Once the laptop has been reset:

  1. Gather the laptop, USB-C charger, and USB-C charging cable.

  2. Package the items securely, using bubble wrap or other packing materials.

  3. Include a note with your full name and email address.

  4. Ship the package to:
