Environment
Students who are studying abroad who may need hardware service for their Bowdoin-issued laptop or iPad.
Information
All Student laptops and iPads are covered by 4-year AppleCare+ which allows them 2 hardware repair calls per year, per device. These repairs are generally easy to request while in the United States where there are an abundance of Apple Stores and a nation-wide phone/chat support network.
When traveling or studying abroad, it can be harder to find support but we highly encourage students to work to find an Authorized Apple Service Center as they are generally the only ones who will honor AppleCare and not charge for repair services.
Call for Support
After contacting IT to let us know that you're seeking a repair while abroad, you should find a contact phone number closest to your location and speak with them. Apple has provided a list of contact numbers within countries they're in. Be sure to let them know that the laptop or iPad was purchased through Apple Education and are covered by AppleCare+.
In some cases, the repair process could be handled all over the phone and through the mail, with Apple shipping you a box for you to ship the device back in for service. Other times, you might need to bring device to a service center.
Locate a Service Center
Apple does have Authorized Service Providers in many countries around the world. You can try to search for one at Appe's Repiar Center website. The site should detect your current region and allow you to search for a provider.
Alternative Options
If you're in a country that does not have an Apple Support Center or an Apple Store, try to locate an Apple Authorized Support Center and be sure they use real Apple parts. You should not be charge for repairs and using non-Apple parts will void AppleCare for the remainder of the device's life and could cause a risk to you or the device itself.
