Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin students accessing the PolarFlix streaming service. PolarFlix is funded by Student Activities and is available at no cost to students. Access requires a connection to Bowdoin's on-campus network — it is not available off campus, and it does not work through the Bowdoin VPN.

What is PolarFlix?

PolarFlix is the Bowdoin name for an on-campus movie streaming service provided through Swank Motion Pictures (also known as Swank MP, or simply Swank). Student Activities pays for the subscription, making it free to all Bowdoin students. The service provides access to a library of films viewable in any web browser while connected to the Bowdoin campus network.

How to Access PolarFlix

  1. Make sure you are connected to the Bowdoin campus network (the Bowdoin Wi-Fi network, or a wired campus connection). PolarFlix uses your IP address to verify campus access — no separate login is required.
  2. Open a web browser and go to swank.bowdoin.edu.
  3. Browse or search the film library and select a title to begin streaming.
Off-campus access is not available. PolarFlix cannot be accessed from off campus, and the Bowdoin VPN does not provide access, including use of the full-tunnel VPN. The service is restricted to on-campus IP addresses only.

Troubleshooting Access Issues

You see a login screen or an "Unauthorized IP address" message

This means PolarFlix does not recognize your current network as a Bowdoin on-campus connection. Check the following:

  • Confirm you are connected to the Bowdoin Wi-Fi network — not Bowdoin-Guest or a personal hotspot.
  • If you are connected to the VPN, disconnect from it. VPN traffic does not grant access to PolarFlix.
  • If you are off campus, you will need to wait until you are back on campus to use the service.

PolarFlix loads but video won't play

  • Try a different web browser (Chrome or Firefox are recommended).
  • Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then reload the page.
  • Disable any browser extensions that may be blocking video playback (ad blockers, privacy shields).
