Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty and staff using a Bowdoin-issued computer running Windows 11 or macOS (Sequoia or Tahoe) that is backed up with Druva inSync.

  • Druva inSync backs up endpoint devices such as laptops and desktops.
  • Druva inSync does not back up data that is already stored in other cloud storage locations such as OneDrive.

Resolution

Druva inSync is endpoint backup software used at Bowdoin so that disk corruption, hardware damage, or malware will not affect the ability of Bowdoin faculty and staff to perform their duties. It also provides easier transitions from one computer to another in the event of a hardware failure or when a Computer Acquisition Program (CAP) replacement takes place for an individual.

Because Druva backs up the data in an encrypted form off campus, it also allows users to access the files saved on their computers from the Internet, either on a different computer or on a mobile device.

How Druva inSync works

Druva uses a client to analyze a user's data and then periodically uploads that content to Druva's secure cloud storage platform. inSync backs up the data every 4 hours, and each user has a fixed amount of storage that can be used for backups. In the event of a computer failure or replacement, the inSync client is reinstalled and the backed-up data is downloaded to the new computer. Depending on when the last backup ran, the age of the saved content will not be more than 4 hours old from the last time the content was touched, assuming you work while connected to the Internet.

Note: Druva inSync does not back up data stored in other cloud storage locations such as OneDrive. Bowdoin recommends using OneDrive as your primary data storage location.
