Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin College students, faculty, and staff who use a Windows PC and prefer a local backup or do not use iCloud. Windows 11 with the latest updates installed is required. The Apple Devices app (which replaced iTunes for this purpose) must be installed. You will need the USB-C cable that came with your iPad.

Resolution

Install the Apple Devices app

If you do not already have the Apple Devices app installed, download it from the Microsoft Store on your Windows PC. Search for Apple Devices and install it. The app is free.

Note: iTunes is no longer used for iPad backup and restore on Windows. The Apple Devices app replaces this functionality.

Connect your iPad

  1. Open the Apple Devices app on your PC.
  2. Connect your iPad to your PC using the USB-C cable that came with it.
  3. Unlock your iPad and tap Trust if prompted to allow the PC access. Enter your iPad passcode when asked.
  4. Your iPad will appear in the device list on the left side of the app. Click it to select it.

Back up your iPad

  1. With your iPad selected, click General in the sidebar.
  2. Under the Backups section, select Back up all of the data on your iPad to this computer.
  3. To encrypt your backup (recommended), check Encrypt local backup and create a password you will remember. Encrypted backups include saved passwords and health data that unencrypted backups do not.
  4. Click Back Up Now and keep your iPad connected until the process finishes.
Important: Do not disconnect your iPad until the backup has fully completed. Disconnecting early may result in an incomplete backup.

Restore your iPad from a backup

  1. Connect your iPad and select it in the Apple Devices app as described above.
  2. Click General in the sidebar.
  3. Under the Backups section, click Restore Backup.
  4. Select the backup you want to restore from the list. If it is encrypted, enter the backup password when prompted.
  5. Click Restore and keep the iPad connected until the process completes.
