Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin College students, faculty, and staff using a college-issued or personal iPad running iPadOS 16 or later. A Wi-Fi connection and sufficient iCloud storage are required. Restoration is typically performed when setting up a new device or after erasing an iPad.

Resolution

Back up your iPad to iCloud

  1. Connect your iPad to Wi-Fi and, if possible, plug it into a power source.
  2. Open the Settings app, tap your name at the top, then tap iCloud.
  3. Tap iCloud Backup and make sure the toggle is turned on (green) to enable automatic daily backups.
  4. Tap Back Up Now to run an immediate manual backup. Stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes.
  5. To confirm the backup succeeded, return to the iCloud Backup screen and check the Last Successful Backup timestamp.
Low iCloud storage? If you see a warning about insufficient storage, you can free up space by removing old backups from other devices in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage, or upgrade your iCloud storage plan through Apple.

Restore your iPad from an iCloud backup

Restoration from iCloud is done during initial iPad setup — either on a new device or after an iPad has been erased.

  1. Power on your iPad and follow the on-screen setup steps.
  2. When you reach the Apps & Data screen, tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID when prompted.
  4. Choose the backup you want to restore from the list. Select the most recent backup unless you have a specific reason to use an older one.
  5. Keep the iPad connected to Wi-Fi and power throughout the restore process. Your apps, settings, and content will be restored when it completes.
Note: Some apps may need to finish downloading from the App Store after the restore completes. This happens automatically in the background as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection.
