Environment

This article applies to current Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff who want to access their Bowdoin email account on an Android phone or tablet.

  • Device: Any Android phone or tablet (personal or Bowdoin-issued)
  • App required: Microsoft Outlook for Android — available free from the Google Play Store
  • Account required: An active Bowdoin Microsoft 365 email account and a registered Okta Verify device for multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Important: The built-in Android Mail app does not support the multi-factor authentication (MFA) required for Bowdoin accounts. You must use the Microsoft Outlook app.

Resolution

Install and configure the Outlook app

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Play Store and search for Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Tap Install and wait for the app to download.
  3. Open the Outlook app. Tap Get Started or Add Account if you already have Outlook installed.
  4. Enter your full Bowdoin email address (for example, username@bowdoin.edu) and tap Continue.
  5. Outlook will redirect you to the Bowdoin sign-in page. Enter your Bowdoin password and tap Sign In.
  6. Complete the Okta multi-factor authentication (MFA) prompt on your device.
  7. Follow any remaining setup prompts. Tap Skip or Maybe Later if asked to add another account.
  8. Your Bowdoin email, calendar, and contacts will begin syncing in the Outlook app.
Tip: Outlook for Android also syncs your Bowdoin calendar and contacts automatically. You do not need a separate app for those.
