Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using Windows 11. Microsoft releases Quality Updates at least once a month, usually on the second Tuesday of the month. The Bowdoin configuration requires updates to attempt to install every Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM. You do not have to wait until Friday, since you can install updates on your own. Installing updates yourself is highly recommended so that a work computer does not install patches in the middle of a meeting or presentation.
Resolution
To manually install updates or run Windows Update on your computer, follow these steps.
- Open Windows Update settings. Press the Windows key, type
Check for updates, and press Enter. This opens the Windows Update section of the Settings app.
- Check for updates. In the Windows Update window, click Check for updates. Windows searches for available updates.
- Install available updates. If updates are found, you can view the details of each update. Click Install now to begin installing. Some updates may require you to agree to license terms or choose specific settings before installation can proceed.
- Restart your computer if required. Some updates require a restart to complete. Save your work, close all applications, and follow the on-screen prompts to restart.
- Verify update installation. After restarting, return to the Windows Update settings to confirm that all updates were installed successfully.
Note: If your button says Restart now, the computer already knows about the updates and is waiting for a reboot to complete the installation.
