Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using a Bowdoin-issued Mac.
- These directions apply to macOS only.
- Some of these steps are unique to Bowdoin-issued Apple computers.
Resolution
There are two ways to install software updates: before you are prompted and after you are prompted.
Install macOS updates before you are prompted
- Save anything you may be working on, as you may be prompted to restart.
- Select the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen and choose System Settings.
- Select General, then Software Update.
- Select Update Now and follow any prompts.
Install macOS updates after you are prompted
- When you see the update prompt, you can either select Update Device or I Understand.

- If you select I Understand, a drop-down menu in the bottom right asks how long you want to defer the prompt.
- Choose the amount of time you want to defer, and the window will close.
- After the period of time you chose, you will be prompted again with the same window to install the update.
- If you select Update Device, another window will appear.

- Select Update Now and follow any prompts.
Helpful tip: Do updates before the deadline when you are prompted to avoid them happening at an inconvenient time.
Install updates after the deadline
- If you do not install the updates until the deadline, you will not be able to defer and will see a message that takes up your entire screen.

- Select Update Device, and another window will appear.

- Select Update Now and follow any prompts.
Important: Updates can take 30 to 45 minutes to install, and a restart is required. Allow yourself the time to perform these updates.
