This article applies to members of the Bowdoin community who are interested in earning or displaying digital badges. Bowdoin's digital badging program is offered through Badgr (Canvas Credentials).

What is a digital badge?
A digital badge, sometimes called a digital credential or micro-credential, is a way to recognize various accomplishments or skills in a way that can be verified online in a digital format. It is more than just a logo or picture. It is a portable icon that is embedded with qualifying information, including who issued the badge, where and how it was earned, and a detailed description of the competencies met to earn the badge. When a badge icon is clicked, the information behind the badge can be shown and the accomplishments can be authenticated and verified.
Where can they be used?
Digital badges can be used in various digital formats or platforms, including LinkedIn, Facebook, email signatures, and more. Almost any digital platform that allows some form of public personalization can support digital badges.
Does Bowdoin use an issuing organization?
Bowdoin has partnered with Badgr to offer digital badges on campus. The first widely used badge was for Digital Accessibility Awareness. Others have and will continue to follow.
Badgr's Glossary of Terms lists the key terms identifying a Badgr digital credential (see the Additional Resources section). Frequently used terms include:
- Badge - as mentioned above, an award that indicates an accomplishment or skill that can be displayed, accessed, and verified online.
- Issuer - account, individual, or organization awarding badges.
- Earner - account or individual receiving badges from completed tasks.
