Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using Windows 11 who want to change their computer's sleep or hibernate settings. Sleep and hibernate are power-saving states that let the computer save energy when it is not in use.
Resolution
Follow these steps to modify the sleep or hibernate settings in Windows 11.
- Open Settings. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen, then select Settings.
- Go to System. In the Settings window, select System in the list on the left side.
- Open Power & Sleep settings. On the right side of the System settings, scroll down and select Power & Sleep to open the settings for sleep and hibernate modes.
- Change sleep settings. Under the Sleep section, use the drop-down menu next to On battery power, PC goes to sleep after and next to When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after to choose how long the PC waits before going to sleep.
- Change hibernate settings. To adjust hibernate, return to the System settings, scroll down, and select Battery. Under the Battery saver section, adjust the settings for when the PC will hibernate.
Close the Settings window when you are done. The PC now follows the new sleep or hibernate settings.
