Environment

This article applies to anyone connected to the BOWDOIN-GUEST wireless network, including campus visitors and Bowdoin community members. BOWDOIN-GUEST is intended as a courtesy network for guests of the college who do not have a Bowdoin account.

Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff should connect to eduroam or BOWDOIN for full access to campus resources. Those networks require Bowdoin credentials.

Resolution

What is available on BOWDOIN-GUEST

Devices connected to BOWDOIN-GUEST have access to the general internet only. Access is provided in 24-hour periods — after 24 hours, the device must re-register to reconnect.

What is not available on BOWDOIN-GUEST

BOWDOIN-GUEST does not provide access to Bowdoin's internal systems and services. The following are not available when connected to the guest network:

  • Printing to Bowdoin campus printers
  • Access to Microwave (network file storage — H: and J: drives)
  • SSH access to Bowdoin services, including the high-performance computing cluster (HPC)
  • Campus-only video resources, including PolarFlix (Swank)
  • Some Polaris (library catalog and portal) features
  • Apple AirPlay and other wireless broadcast technology to devices on a different network segment
Bowdoin account holders: If you have a Bowdoin account, do not use BOWDOIN-GUEST for regular work or academic activities. Connect to eduroam or BOWDOIN instead. If you are having trouble connecting to those networks, contact the Service Desk.
