Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty, staff, and students using an Apple computer running macOS Sequoia (15.x) or Tahoe (26.x). It is intended for people experiencing slow internet, website loading errors, errors resolving names and addresses, or custom Domain Name System (DNS) settings that are not compatible with Bowdoin's network. The instructions apply whether you connect over Wi-Fi (wireless) or Ethernet (wired).

Resolution

The Domain Name System (DNS) translates website names into the addresses your Mac uses to connect. Removing custom DNS servers lets your Mac use the DNS settings provided automatically by the network.

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and choose System Settings.
  2. In the sidebar, select Network.
  3. Choose your currently active network connection:
    • For Wi-Fi: select Wi-Fi, then click the Details button next to the network name.
    • For Ethernet: select Ethernet, then click the Details button.
  4. Select the DNS tab.
  5. Under DNS Servers, review the list. To remove a custom DNS server, select it and click the - (minus) button. Repeat for each custom entry.
  6. Once all custom DNS entries are removed, your Mac will automatically use the DNS settings provided by the network (usually assigned by Bowdoin, your router, or your ISP).
  7. Click OK to save your changes, then click Apply to finalize the settings.
  8. Close System Settings.
  9. To make sure the changes take effect, disconnect and reconnect your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, or restart your Mac.
