Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin College students, faculty, and staff. LibreChat is Bowdoin's web-based AI chat platform, providing access to multiple AI models — including OpenAI GPT models and Anthropic Claude — through a single Bowdoin login. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) on campus and off-campus networks. No software installation is required.

  • Who: All current Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff
  • What: LibreChat web interface accessed through the Bowdoin login portal
  • Not covered: Consumer apps such as ChatGPT.com, Claude.ai, or Google Gemini (personal accounts) — see Get started with Copilot, Gemini, and LibreChat at Bowdoin in the Related Articles section for guidance on those tools
Note for students: You must complete the Learning Paths into GenAI course in Canvas before LibreChat access is activated for your account. Faculty and staff do not have this prerequisite.

Resolution

  1. Open a supported web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari) on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Go to login.bowdoin.edu and select the LibreChat tile.
  3. Sign in with your Bowdoin username and password if prompted.
  4. Select New Chat to start a conversation. From the model menu in the upper-left corner, choose the model you want to use — for example, an OpenAI GPT model such as GPT-4o or GPT-5, or an Anthropic model such as Claude Sonnet 4.
  5. Type your question or task in plain language. Be specific — for example, "Summarize this article in 5 bullet points" or "Draft an outline for a 10-minute presentation on climate change." You can also ask the model to provide examples, explain step by step, or adjust its response length.
  6. Review the response and refine your request if needed. You can ask the model to adjust tone, add sources, focus on specific details, or try a different approach.

Data safety guidelines

Follow these practices whenever using any AI tool at Bowdoin:

  • Do not paste confidential, personal, or restricted information into AI tools.
  • Remove names, student IDs, and other sensitive details from any text before sharing it.
  • Double-check facts before acting on them — AI responses can be inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Keep copies of important outputs; chat history may be cleared or expire.
