Environment

This article applies to anyone installing campus printers on a Bowdoin-issued computer with PaperCut Print Deploy:

  • Who: Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff.
  • Devices: Bowdoin-issued Macs running a current version of macOS, and Bowdoin-issued Windows 11 computers.
  • What: PaperCut Print Deploy, the app that installs campus printers and keeps their settings up to date. The most common printers are Find-Me-Print (for everyone) and Find-Me-Print-Color (for students who want to print in color). On a Mac, Find-Me-Print appears as Find_Me_Print. On Windows 11, Find-Me-Print appears as Find-Me-Print[Bowdoin](Mobility). Department printers, including the Lexmark printers, are named for their building and room.
  • Not covered: Print jobs that don't reach the printer after the printer is installed. Those problems come from the PaperCut Client, not Print Deploy. See PaperCut Client Troubleshooting in the Related Articles section. Personal computers use a different setup process. See Print from a Personal Mac or Windows Computer in the Related Articles section.
Note: Print Deploy only installs printers. Once a printer is installed, Print Deploy doesn't need to be running for you to print. If a printer is already in your print dialog but your documents never show up at the printer, the PaperCut Client is the app to check. See PaperCut Client Troubleshooting in the Related Articles section.

Print Deploy can't find its servers

Print Deploy shows the message "Well this is awkward" followed by "The Print Deploy client can't find its servers! Check your network connection and click Try again." Print Deploy shows this message when it can't reach Bowdoin's PaperCut server. Print Deploy only reaches the PaperCut server from the campus network or through the Bowdoin Virtual Private Network (VPN).

  1. On campus, confirm your computer is connected to the BOWDOIN or eduroam Wi-Fi network, or to a wired campus connection.
  2. Off campus, open the GlobalProtect app and connect to the Bowdoin VPN. For GlobalProtect steps, see Using GlobalProtect VPN on macOS or Using GlobalProtect VPN on Windows in the Related Articles section.
  3. Once your computer is connected to the campus network or to GlobalProtect, click Try again in the Print Deploy window.
  4. If Print Deploy still can't find its servers, restart your computer, reconnect to the campus network or GlobalProtect, and open Print Deploy again.
  5. If the message comes back after a restart, reinstall Print Deploy. The reinstall steps are in the Reinstall Print Deploy section of this article.

A printer is missing from the Print Deploy list

The My printers page in Print Deploy shows only the printers already installed on your computer. Printers you haven't installed yet, including Find-Me-Print and Find-Me-Print-Color, are on the Add printers page.

  1. Click the Print Deploy icon in the menu bar (macOS) or the system tray (Windows 11), then choose View my printers.
  2. If Print Deploy asks you to sign in, sign in with your Bowdoin username and password.
  3. Click Add printers on the left side of the Print Deploy window.
  4. Search for the printer by name or location. Find-Me-Print appears as Find_Me_Print on a Mac and as Find-Me-Print[Bowdoin](Mobility) on Windows 11. Students looking for color printing should search for Find-Me-Print-Color.
  5. Click Install next to the printer name.

If the printer you need isn't on the Add printers page, Print Deploy may not have the newest printer list yet. Click the Print Deploy icon and choose Refresh my printers now, then check the Add printers page again.

Some printers only appear for certain people or places. Department printers appear only for members of that department, and some printers appear only when your computer is on the part of campus where the printer is located. If a printer you need is still missing after a refresh, contact the Service Desk, because the printer may need to be made available to your account.

Print Deploy says "We can't find any printers for you": Print Deploy shows this message when no printers have been installed for you automatically yet. Click Add printers on the left side of the Print Deploy window to see the printers you can install.

A printer won't install

Print Deploy shows "Failed" after you click Install

A "Failed" message usually means the printer's driver, the software your computer uses to talk to the printer, didn't install correctly.

  1. Click the Print Deploy icon and choose Refresh my printers now.
  2. Open the Add printers page and click Install next to the printer a second time.
  3. If the printer fails a second time, take a screenshot of the Print Deploy window and contact the Service Desk. Include the printer name and whether your computer is a Mac or a Windows 11 computer.

Windows 11 asks you to sign in again

Some printers on Windows 11, including Find-Me-Print[Bowdoin](Mobility), ask you to sign in a second time while the printer installs. Sign in with your full Bowdoin email address (for example, username@bowdoin.edu) and your Bowdoin password, not just your username.

Windows 11 asks for an administrator password

Windows 11 can show a User Account Control box that asks, "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" for Printer driver software installation. If the User Account Control box asks for an administrator name and password that you don't have, click No and contact the Service Desk so a technician can finish installing the printer.

The Print Deploy icon is missing

Print Deploy normally starts on its own when you sign in to your computer, and it places an icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen on a Mac, or in the system tray near the clock on Windows 11.

  1. On Windows 11, click the up-arrow in the system tray to show hidden icons, and look for the Print Deploy icon there.
  2. If the Print Deploy icon still isn't there, restart your computer and sign in again.
  3. If the Print Deploy icon is still missing after a restart, reinstall Print Deploy. The reinstall steps are in the Reinstall Print Deploy section of this article.

A printer can't be deleted in Print Deploy

Information Technology (IT) installs some printers automatically based on your department, group, or building. On the My printers page, an automatically installed printer has a crossed-out trash can icon next to it, and Print Deploy won't let you remove that printer. You can delete any printer you installed yourself by clicking the trash can icon next to the printer's name.

If an automatically installed printer shouldn't be on your computer, for example after you change offices, contact the Service Desk so IT can update the printer assignment.

Signed in as someone else? To change the account Print Deploy uses, click Change user at the bottom of the left side of the Print Deploy window, then sign in with your own Bowdoin username and password.

Reinstall Print Deploy

Important: Reinstall Print Deploy while your computer is on the campus network or connected to GlobalProtect. Off campus without GlobalProtect, the install fails without showing an error.

macOS

  1. Open the Applications folder and open Self Service.
  2. Type PaperCut in the search field on the left side of the Self Service window.
  3. Click Install (or Re-Install) under PaperCut Print Deploy.
  4. Wait for the Self Service button to change to Re-Install, which means Print Deploy finished installing.
  5. Click the Print Deploy icon in the menu bar and choose View my printers to confirm your printers are listed.

Windows 11

  1. Open the Start menu and open Company Portal.
  2. Type PaperCut in the Company Portal search bar.
  3. Click PaperCut Print Deploy Client, then click Install.
  4. If Company Portal shows Uninstall instead of Install, Company Portal already considers Print Deploy installed. Restart your computer and check the system tray for the Print Deploy icon.
  5. Click the Print Deploy icon in the system tray and choose View my printers to confirm your printers are listed.

If Self Service or Company Portal is missing from your computer, your computer may not be enrolled in Bowdoin management. Contact the Service Desk before trying any other fix. For more detail, see How to install PaperCut software on a Bowdoin computer in the Related Articles section.
