Environment

This article applies to Apple computers running macOS Monterey, Ventura, or newer. It is intended for customers who have experience slow Internet, website loading errors, errors resolving names and addresses, or custom DNS settings that are not compatible with Bowdoin's network. The instructions are relevant whether you're connecting via Wi-Fi (wireless) or Ethernet (wired).

Resolution

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and choose System Settings (or System Preferences if you're on macOS Monterey or earlier).
  2. In the sidebar, select Network.
  3. Choose your currently active network connection:
    • For Wi-Fi users: Click Wi-Fi, then click the Details or Advanced button.
    • For Ethernet users: Click Ethernet, then click the Details or Advanced button.
  4. Go to the DNS tab.
  5. Under the section labeled DNS Servers, review the list:
    • To remove custom DNS servers, select each one and click the - (minus) button.
  6. Once all custom DNS entries are removed, your Mac will automatically use the DNS settings provided by your network (usually assigned by Bowdoin, your router, or ISP).
  7. Click OK to save your changes, then click Apply to finalize the settings.
  8. Close System Settings (or System Preferences).
  9. To ensure the changes take effect, disconnect and reconnect your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, or restart your Mac.
