Environment
This article applies to faculty, staff, and students who own video content in their Panopto media library and want to make simple edits in a web browser.
- Platform: Panopto web editor, accessed in a browser at
panopto.bowdoin.edu. Works on both macOS and Windows.
- Recommended browsers: The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
- Requirement: You must be the owner of the video, or have edit permission granted by the owner.
Note: Editing in Panopto is non-destructive. Trimming and cutting hide sections rather than deleting them, so you can restore hidden footage later by removing the cut.
Resolution
The Panopto editor lets you trim the start and end of a video and remove unwanted sections from the middle. Open the editor first, then make your edits, then publish.
Open the Panopto editor
- Sign in to Panopto at
panopto.bowdoin.edu.
- Hover over the video you want to edit in your media library and select Edit. The video opens in the Panopto editor.
Trim the beginning or end
- In the timeline at the bottom of the editor, find the shaded handles at the far left (start) and far right (end) of the video.
- Drag the left handle inward to hide footage at the beginning, or drag the right handle inward to hide footage at the end. The hidden portion appears greyed out.
Cut out a section from the middle
- In the editor toolbar, select the Cut tool (the scissors icon).
- Click and drag across the portion of the timeline you want to remove. The selected section is greyed out and will be hidden during playback.
- Repeat for any additional sections you want to cut.
Publish your edits
- Select Apply (or Publish) in the top-right corner of the editor to save your changes.
- Panopto reprocesses the video. Once processing finishes, viewers see the edited version.
Note: To restore footage you trimmed or cut, reopen the editor, drag the trim handles back out or delete the greyed-out cut, and select Apply again.
