Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin College faculty, staff, and students who want to record a screencast, webcam video, or audio. Panopto Capture runs entirely in a web browser — no software installation is required.

  • Supported browsers: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (latest version). Safari is not supported.
  • Requires: A Bowdoin Panopto account (automatically provisioned with your Bowdoin account)

Resolution

Step 1 — Open Panopto Capture

  1. Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Sign in to panopto.bowdoin.edu with your Bowdoin username and password.
  3. Click the Create button at the top of the page.
  4. Select Panopto Capture from the menu. Panopto Capture will open in a new browser tab.

Step 2 — Configure your recording sources

Before recording, select what you want to capture:

  • Screen or application: Click the Screens and Apps button and choose to share your entire screen, a specific application window, or a browser tab.
  • Webcam: Click the Video button and select your camera from the drop-down list.
  • Microphone: Click the Audio button and select your microphone.
Browser permissions: The first time you use Panopto Capture, your browser will ask for permission to access your camera and microphone. You must allow both for recording to work. If you accidentally denied permission, click the lock icon in the browser address bar to update site permissions.

Step 3 — Record

  1. When your sources are configured, click the red Record button.
  2. A short countdown will appear before recording begins.
  3. Record your content. You can pause the recording at any time using the Pause button.
  4. When finished, click Stop.

Step 4 — Save your recording

  1. After stopping, Panopto Capture will show a preview of your recording.
  2. Choose the Panopto folder where you want to save it using the folder selector.
  3. Give your recording a name.
  4. Click Upload (or Save and Upload) to save it to your Panopto media library.
Processing time: After uploading, Panopto will process the recording before it is viewable. This typically takes a few minutes. You will receive an email when the video is ready.

Once your recording is in Panopto, you can embed it in a Canvas course — see Upload and Embed Panopto Videos in Canvas in the Related Articles section.
