- The EndNote "Cite While You Write" add-in does not load in Word on my Mac.
- The EndNote toolbar or tab is missing in Word on my Apple Silicon Mac.
- Why is my Word add-in not compatible with this version of Word?
- How do I get the EndNote add-in to work in Word on an Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3) Mac?
Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using the EndNote "Cite While You Write" add-in in Microsoft Word on an Apple Silicon Mac. This is a known issue on Apple Silicon Macs with the Universal build of Microsoft Word: the EndNote "Cite While You Write" add-in does not launch in the Universal Apple Silicon version of Word.
Resolution
Use the following workaround until EndNote updates the add-in for native Apple Silicon Mac compatibility.
- Go to Finder > Applications > Microsoft Word.
- Right-click Microsoft Word and choose Get Info.
- Check the box Open Using Rosetta. This forces Microsoft Word to launch as an Intel program and restores compatibility with the EndNote add-in.
