Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using Windows 11. When contacting the Service Desk for support, it is helpful to have your Computer Name ready. Providing it lets the Service Desk quickly look up your system, its specifications, and its status.
- The Computer Name may not match the BID number on any Bowdoin bar code sticker on your device.
Resolution
If the computer is powered on
- Click the Start Menu and select Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find your Computer Name labeled as the PC Name.
Example Computer Name: FFKN25S
If a laptop cannot power on
- Close the laptop and turn it over so you can see the bottom.
- Find the white sticker labeled Service Tag.
- Give the set of alphanumeric characters labeled Service Tag to the Service Desk. The Service Tag is not the Computer Name, but the Service Desk can look up the Computer Name from that Service Tag number.
If a desktop or all-in-one cannot power on
- Locate the sticker labeled Service Tag. On desktops it is normally on the top or back of the case. On all-in-ones it is normally on the bottom, on the back of the screen, or on the stand.
- Give the set of alphanumeric characters labeled Service Tag to the Service Desk. The Service Tag is not the Computer Name, but the Service Desk can look up the Computer Name from that Service Tag number.
