Fix the "Lower Wattage Power Adapter" Message on a Dell Laptop

Issues

  • My Dell laptop shows a message at startup about a lower wattage power adapter.
  • I see a warning that says a USB-C charging device or power pass-through device is connected.
  • A message says my system will continue to work but may not perform at its peak.

Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty and staff using Dell laptops running Windows 11 that charge through certain USB-C adapters. When power is connected through some USB-C adapters, the laptop may display the following message when booting:

"You have plugged in a lower wattage power adapter, USB-C charging device, or power pass-through device. Your system will continue to work, but may not perform at its peak."

This is a known issue. You can continue to use the laptop without damage.

Resolution

  1. In the upper-right corner of the window, check the box next to Do Not Show Again.
  2. Click Continue.
