Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using Bruker TopSpin for coursework or research. TopSpin is available for macOS and Windows. A TopSpin account using a Bowdoin email address is required before you can use TopSpin.

macOS

Install TopSpin on macOS

  1. Go to your Applications folder and open Self Service.
  2. Search for TopSpin and click Install. Even though this says installing, it is actually only copying the installer to your computer.
  3. Once complete, it will say "Reinstall". Go to the Macintosh HD > Users > Shared > Topspin folder.
  4. Right-click or Ctrl-click on TopSpin4.2.0.pkg and choose Open.
  5. You will see "Verifying TopSpin", which could take a few minutes.
  6. When you get a message that says macOS cannot verify the developer of TopSpin, click Open.

  7. Click Continue, Continue, Agree, and Install.
  8. Enter your computer password when prompted and click Install Software.
  9. When asked for an NMR administrator password, enter NMR next to Password and NMR next to Verify. Click OK.

  10. If asked about installing Xcode command line tools, click Yes. This process could take 10 minutes.

  11. Click Install, Agree, and when it is complete click Done.
  12. If you see a message that says CodeMeter is damaged and cannot be opened, click Cancel. You may have to do this three times.
  13. When you see Installer would like to Modify Apps on your Mac, click OK.
  14. When complete, click Close.
  15. Back in the Macintosh HD > Users > Shared > Topspin folder, double-click on CMInstall.pkg.
  16. Click Continue three times, then Agree and Install.
  17. Enter your computer password when prompted and click Install Software.
  18. When complete, click Close.

Launch TopSpin on macOS

  1. Go to your Applications folder and open TopSpin.
  2. If asked "Do you want to allow cprserver, cprclient, or dataserver to accept incoming connections?", click Allow for all three.
  3. At the license agreement, click I Accept.

  4. If asked "Do you want to allow restartserver or toolserver to accept incoming connections?", click Allow for both.

Obtain a TopSpin License on macOS

  1. Click Request a free Academic License, which will bring you to a login page.

  2. If you do not have an account, click Register.
  3. Enter the required information and click Register.
  4. Open your email and look for a message from no-rely@web.bruker.com.
  5. Click the link for email address verification.
  6. Once the email has been verified, go back to your web browser and click the back button.
    • If you do not see a login page, click the link to restart the login process.
  7. Log in with the username and password.
  8. Scroll down and click Request Academia License.
  9. Copy the License Key.
  10. Go back to TopSpin and click Install License Ticket.
  11. Paste the License Key into the Ticket field and click Next.
  12. Click Activate Licenses.
  13. Choose I want my licenses on one Computer.

  15. When complete, click OK.
  16. Click Exit.
  17. Open TopSpin again from the Applications folder.
  18. Click I Accept.
  19. If asked "Do you want to allow hconfserver to accept incoming connections?", click Allow.

Windows

Install TopSpin on Windows

  1. Download TopSpin from the Bowdoin SharePoint download link.
  2. If prompted, sign in.
  3. Click Download when prompted.
  4. Go to your Downloads folder and double-click the file Topspin-4.2.0-windows.exe to open it.
  5. If prompted with "Windows Defender protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.
  6. You will see a command prompt window scrolling through text.
  7. When the installer starts, click Next.
  8. At "Selection of Components to Install", click Next.
  9. Click Next at the next two prompts.
  10. Click Yes when asked if you want to create the directory.
  11. Select the Setup type you want and click Next.
  12. When asked for a super user, click Next.
  13. When asked for an NMR administrator password, enter NMR in both boxes. Click Next.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Click Yes when asked if you want to create the directory.
  16. When asked to configure the Windows firewall automatically, click Next and Next again.
  17. The installation will begin.
  18. When complete, click Finish.

Launch TopSpin 4.2 on Windows

  1. Launch TopSpin 4.2 from your Desktop.
  2. When prompted, click I Accept.

Obtain a TopSpin License on Windows

  1. Click Request a free Academic License, which will bring you to a login page.

  13. Click Activate Licenses.
  14. Choose I want my licenses on one Computer.

  18. Launch TopSpin 4.2 from your Desktop.
  19. Click I Accept.
