Using NameCoach in Canvas (Instructor)

Questions

  • How do I enable NameCoach in my Canvas course?
  • How do I turn on the NameCoach link in my course navigation?
  • How do I hear how my students pronounce their names?
  • How do I authorize the connection between Canvas and NameCoach?
  • How can I see which students have not yet recorded their names?
  • Can I ask students to record their name pronunciations as an assignment?

Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty teaching in Canvas. NameCoach makes name pronunciations available within a Canvas course; once a person records a pronunciation, it is available in any Canvas course they are enrolled in, and course rosters are automatically synchronized with available NameCoach recordings.

Resolution

The video below demonstrates accessing NameCoach in Canvas.

Faculty access NameCoach in their Canvas course. To enable NameCoach, follow these steps:

  1. In your Canvas course, select the Settings link in the course navigation menu.
  2. In the Navigation tab, enable NameCoach and confirm the change is saved.
  3. In the NameCoach course navigation link, authorize the connection between Canvas and NameCoach. This is a one-time step.
  4. View your current NameCoach recording, or record it for the first time.
  5. View and listen to your students' NameCoach recordings. You will also see a list of enrolled students who have not yet recorded their name pronunciations.
Tip: A Canvas Assignment can be created to encourage your students to record their name pronunciations. This can be a useful exercise at the beginning of a course.
