Environment
This article applies to anyone using a Mac running macOS who needs to capture an image of their screen, such as when reporting a problem, saving a snippet of information, or sharing a view of their screen with others.
Resolution
macOS includes several built-in keyboard shortcuts for taking screenshots. Screenshots are saved to the desktop by default.
- Full-screen screenshot: Press Command + Shift + 3 to capture the entire screen.
- Selected-area screenshot: Press Command + Shift + 4 together. A crosshair will appear. Click and drag to select the area to capture, then release the mouse or trackpad button to take the screenshot. The screenshot will be saved to the desktop.
- Specific-window screenshot: Press Command + Shift + 4 together, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera icon. Click on the window to capture. The screenshot will be saved to the desktop.
