Environment

This article applies to new and incoming Bowdoin students who have received their Bowdoin account credentials but cannot access one or more applications in Okta. It is specifically relevant from early spring through late June, before account permissions are updated in July as part of the annual onboarding cycle.

  • Applies to: New and incoming students (typically spring semester through June)
  • Platform: Okta — login.bowdoin.edu
  • Affected apps may include: Canvas and other campus applications not yet provisioned for incoming accounts
  • Not covered: Current students or employees experiencing access issues — see Troubleshoot Access Issues When You Can't Open Bowdoin Web Pages After Signing In in the Related Articles section

Resolution

Limited access to some Okta applications is a normal and expected part of the new student onboarding process. Follow the steps below to confirm the issue and determine whether any action is needed on your part.

  1. Understand the timing. Full access to all Okta-connected applications — including Canvas and other course tools — is typically granted in July, before the start of the academic year. Until then, new student accounts are provisioned with a limited set of services only.
  2. Check which apps are available. Sign in to Okta at login.bowdoin.edu and review the apps shown on your dashboard. Apps that appear grayed out or return a permission error are likely not yet provisioned for incoming accounts.
  3. Wait for the July permissions update. If you receive an access error, no action is typically required on your part. Permissions are updated automatically for all incoming students in July. You do not need to submit a request for this update to occur.
  4. Try again after the July update. After the permissions update, sign in to Okta again and confirm that you can now access all required applications. Most access issues resolve at this point without further intervention.
  5. Contact the Service Desk if problems persist. If you still cannot access a required application after July, or if you encounter an error that does not match the description above, reach out to the Service Desk for assistance.
Need access before July? If you need access to a specific application before July for a summer program, orientation activity, or early course requirement, contact the Service Desk directly. Early-access exceptions may be possible in some cases.
