Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin community members using Microsoft 365. Immersive Reader is built into Word and Microsoft Edge (among other apps) at no extra cost and requires no installation.
Resolution
Immersive Reader in Word
- Open your document and select the View tab.
- Select Immersive Reader to open the full-screen view.
- Select Read Aloud. Each word is highlighted as it is read.
- Use the settings to change reading speed and voice, and adjust text size, spacing, and Line Focus to reduce distraction.
Immersive Reader and Read Aloud in Microsoft Edge
- Open the web page or online document you want to hear.
- Select Enter Immersive Reader in the address bar, or press F9. (You can also highlight text, right-click, and choose Open in Immersive Reader.)
- Select Read aloud in the toolbar to start.
- Use Voice options to change the speaker and speed, then Pause or close Immersive Reader to stop.
Tip: Immersive Reader also offers Line Focus, a picture dictionary, and translation — useful for concentration and for reading in another language.
