Resolution

Check your usage

You can check your usage two ways.

Claude desktop app (quick glance): Right-click the Claude icon in the menu bar (Mac) or the system tray (Windows). The menu shows each limit with the percentage used and when it resets:

  • 5-hour limit: your rolling five-hour session limit.
  • Weekly, all models: your weekly limit across every model.
  • Weekly, Fable: a separate weekly limit for Fable, included on Premium seats. Standard seats do not include Fable in the plan, so this line may not appear.
  • Usage credits: how much of your $20 monthly overage credit you have used, shown as a dollar amount (for example, $0.00 of $20.00), and the date it resets.

The menu also has a Refresh option and a Usage settings link to the full view.

Settings > Usage (any device): Open Claude and go to Settings, then Usage (claude.ai/settings/usage). This shows the same limits and your overage credit, and it works on the web, desktop, and mobile.

Know when to wait

Your session limit runs on a rolling five-hour window that starts with your first message, so it comes back quickly. Your weekly limit resets on the date and time shown on the Usage page. Because these reset often, the simplest move when you hit a limit is usually to check the reset time and pick your work back up then. You keep your full allowance and spend nothing extra.

Use your monthly overage credit

If you need to keep going before your limit resets, every Claude seat at Bowdoin has a small overage credit of $20 per month. This is the same for both Standard and Premium seats. When you choose to continue past your included limits, your usage draws from that $20 as you go, across the month. When the credit is used up, you can either wait for your next reset or request an increase. The overage credit resets at the start of each month.

Track your own usage

IT does not track your individual usage. There is no per-person view on our end, so each person is responsible for watching their own numbers on the Usage page. It is worth a quick check before a big block of work, so a limit does not stop you in the middle of something.

Make your usage go further

A few habits stretch your allowance before you ever reach a limit:

  • Put reference material in a Project. Project files are cached, so reusing them does not count against your limits each time.
  • Combine related questions into one message instead of sending many short ones.
  • Be specific up front, so you need fewer follow-up messages.

Request more usage for the month

If you expect to need more than your seat and overage credit allow, request an increase through the Change Claude Funding or Usage Limits offering, part of the Claude service. A few things to know before you request:

  • Increases apply to the current month and reset at the start of the next month, the same as the standard overage credit.
  • Overage usage is billed to your department, so your request may need approval from a senior officer or budget manager before IT can raise your limit.
  • If your extra usage is paid for by a grant, Hastings funding, or another special source, say so in the request and name the source. With dedicated funding in place, we can hold a higher overage limit for you for longer than a single month.
