  • Why is Windows Defender turned off on my Bowdoin laptop?

Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty and staff using Bowdoin-issued Windows 11 computers managed by Bowdoin Information Technology.

Resolution

This warning is expected and can be safely ignored. CrowdStrike Falcon has replaced Windows Defender as the primary antivirus and endpoint protection solution on all Bowdoin-issued faculty and staff Windows computers. When CrowdStrike takes over as the active protection, Windows may display a notification stating that Defender has been turned off or is unavailable — this is normal behavior.

Your computer is protected: If you see this warning on a Bowdoin-issued Windows computer, it means CrowdStrike Falcon is actively protecting your device. No action is required.

Do not attempt to re-enable Windows Defender. Doing so may conflict with CrowdStrike's operation. If you have concerns about your computer's security or are seeing other unusual behavior, contact the Service Desk.
