How to locate the Computer Name for Windows Computers

Question

  • How do I find the Computer Name on my Windows computer?
  • How do I find my Windows computer name?

Environment

When contacting the Service Desk  for support, it is helpful to have your "Computer Name".  Previously, this has been a BID number associated with a Bowdoin bar code sticker on your laptop or desktop computer.  Though the sticker may still be on your computer, the "Computer Name" may not match that barcode number.

Having your "Computer Name" ready or included in your service request, helps us to expedite your request for service by allowing us to quickly look up your system, it's specifications and its status.

Resolution

If The Computer Is Powered On:

  • Click on the Start Menu and choose "Settings"

    • While the Service Tag is not the computer name. the Service Desk can look up the computer name by that Service Tag number.
