Environment

This article applies to any Bowdoin student, faculty, or staff member who uses Microsoft 365 or Okta and needs to quickly sign out of every active session — for example, when a phone, tablet, or laptop is lost, stolen, or when there is a concern about unauthorized access to your account.

  • Applies to: All Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff
  • Platforms covered: Microsoft 365 (myaccount.microsoft.com) and Okta (login.bowdoin.edu)
  • Can be done from: Any device with internet access and a web browser, including a borrowed or public computer if your own device is unavailable

Resolution

Act quickly. If your device is lost or stolen, complete these steps — especially changing your password — as soon as possible to minimize the risk of unauthorized access to your account.

Step 1: Change your password immediately

Changing your password is the single most important step. It immediately invalidates existing sessions on all devices across both Microsoft 365 and Okta.

  1. From a secure device, go to https://login.bowdoin.edu.
  2. If you cannot sign in, use the Need help signing in? link to initiate a self-service password reset.
  3. Follow the prompts to reset or change your password.

For step-by-step instructions, see Resetting your Bowdoin account password in the Related Articles section.

Step 2: Sign out of all devices in Microsoft 365

  1. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with your Bowdoin account.
  2. In the left navigation, select Security info.
  3. Look for the option labeled Sign out everywhere or Sign out from all sessions and click it.
  4. If that option is not visible, go to Devices in the left navigation, review the list for any unfamiliar entries, and click Sign out or Remove for each.
Note: The exact label and location of the "Sign out everywhere" option may vary depending on the current version of the Microsoft account portal. If you cannot find it, contact the Service Desk and request a forced logout.

Step 3: Sign out of all devices in Okta

  1. Sign in to Okta at https://login.bowdoin.edu from a secure device.
  2. Click your name or initials in the upper-right corner of the Okta dashboard.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. Scroll down to the section labeled End All Sessions.
  5. Click Sign out to end all active Okta sessions except your current one.
Can't sign in to Okta? If you are unable to access your account to complete this step, contact the Service Desk immediately and request a forced logout on all devices.

Step 4: Review recent account activity (recommended)

  1. In Microsoft 365, go to My Sign-ins at https://mysignins.microsoft.com to review recent login locations and devices.
  2. In Okta, check your account settings for any sign-in history.
  3. If you notice any sign-ins from unfamiliar locations or devices, report them to the Service Desk immediately.
