Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff using a Bowdoin Microsoft 365 account on any device (Windows or Mac) with a modern web browser (Edge, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox). It covers Visio files stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, or Microsoft Teams. Visio on the web works best with .vsdx files. There is no native Visio desktop app for macOS; use the web version on Mac.

Resolution

  1. Go to Microsoft 365 and sign in
    1. Open Microsoft 365 at office.com.
    2. Sign in with your Bowdoin email and password.
  2. Upload or locate your Visio file
    1. From the app launcher, open OneDrive (or go to the SharePoint or Teams location where the file lives).
    2. To add a local file, click Upload > Files, then choose your Visio file (prefer .vsdx).
  3. Open the file in Visio on the web
    1. In OneDrive or SharePoint, click the Visio file once. It will open in your browser.
    2. If you see an option, select Open > Visio for the web.
    3. In Teams, select the file, then choose Open > Open in browser (this opens Visio on the web).
  4. Use basic viewing tools
    1. Use Zoom in, Zoom out, and Fit to window for a clearer view.
    2. Use your mouse or trackpad to pan around the diagram.
  5. If the file does not open as expected
    • File type: Visio on the web works best with .vsdx. If your file ends with .vsd, save a copy as .vsdx for best results. On Windows with the desktop Visio app, open the file and choose File > Save As, then select .vsdx and upload it to OneDrive or SharePoint.
    • Location: Make sure the file is stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams. Downloaded files on your computer need to be uploaded before opening online.
    • License message: If you see a message about licensing or permissions, viewing may still work; editing features may be limited.
