Specialized Academic Technology Support

One-Line Summary

Use this request to get hands-on help or a working collaboration for specialized academic technology in your teaching or research, including research computing and data, mapping and GIS, media production, 3D and immersive technology, application and web development, and drones.

When to Use This

Choose this request when your project calls for specialist expertise in one of these areas:

  • Research Computing & Data — high-performance computing, statistics and statistical methods, data and text mining, and database design, migration, or documentation.
  • Mapping & GIS — georeferencing historic maps, creating new maps, and representing spatial and temporal data.
  • Media Production & Digitization — creating original photo, audio, video, and animation, and extracting, combining, or digitizing media.
  • Interactive, 3D, VR/AR & Multimedia — 3D printing, scanning, laser cutting, CAD, virtual and augmented reality, exhibits, timelines, animation, game design, and digital storytelling.
  • Application, Web & Mobile Development — custom applications, web-based tools, course/faculty/research websites, and mobile data collection.
  • Drones & UAVs — aerial photography, remote sensing, mapping, and exploration. (College UAV policy applies — you'll confirm this on the form.)
Not sure which area fits, or working across several? Submit anyway and choose the closest match — or "Not sure / not listed." The Academic Technology team will route it to the right specialist. You don't need to identify the exact area to get help.

When NOT to Use This

  • You want help teaching with technology — course design, the learning management system, assessment tools, accessibility. Use Request a Teaching Technology Consultation instead.
  • You already know the tool and just need help using or fixing it. Use Get Help with a Specific Tool or Application.
  • A general software, computer, or hardware problem — including lab hardware — is broken, won't install, or needs repair. That goes to the Service Desk through General IT Help or by calling (207) 725-3030.
  • Classroom technology is broken during a class. Use Report a Room Technology Issue and call the Service Desk.

Before You Submit

Have ready a short description of your project and what you're trying to accomplish, the area of support that fits best, any tools, data, or equipment already involved, and any deadlines such as a grant date, exhibit, conference, or term. If your work involves drones or UAVs, be ready to confirm you've reviewed the College's UAV policy.

What Happens Next

Your request goes to the Academic Technology team, who will respond within one business day to confirm scope and connect you with the right specialist. Specialized projects are often collaborative and may span more than one meeting; when that's the case, we'll set expectations with you. You chose your preferred way to connect on the form (email, video, or in person), and we'll honor it where we can. If your project may need outside resources or partners, we'll tell you up front.
