Environment

This article applies to anyone using a personal Mac. It covers basic steps to keep the computer secure and protected from unauthorized access. Bowdoin does not offer anti-virus software for home use.

Resolution

Apply updates

Enable automatic updates on your computer and web browser to keep your system secure and up to date.

Prevent unauthorized access

There are simple ways to set up and protect your computer from viruses, malware, and other unauthorized access.

  • Install anti-virus software. While Bowdoin does not offer anti-virus for home use, we recommend Avast Security for Home (see Install Avast Security for Home in the Related Articles section) or most other major anti-virus applications.
  • Enable the application firewall. Select the Apple menu, open System Settings, select Network, select Firewall, then turn on the firewall. For more detail, see Apple: Turn on and configure the firewall on Mac.

Use strong passwords

Use a strong password for you and your Mac. See Create a Strong Password in the Related Articles section for guidance.

Lock your screen

Lock your screen when you are away from your computer. Select the Apple menu and choose Lock Screen, or press Control + Command + Q.

To automatically lock the screen when the screen saver turns on, select the Apple menu, open System Settings, select Lock Screen, and set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off.
