Resolution

Step 1 — Add a quiz to your Panopto video

  1. Go to panopto.bowdoin.edu and sign in with your Bowdoin account.
  2. Locate the video you want to add a quiz to and click its title or thumbnail to open it in the player.
  3. Click the Edit (pencil) icon in the top-right corner of the player.
  4. In the video editor, use the timeline at the bottom to navigate to the point in the video where you want the quiz to appear.
  5. In the left-hand menu, click Quizzes, then click Add a Quiz.
  6. Give your quiz a name, then add your first question. Available question types:
    • True / False
    • Multiple Choice
    • Multiple Select
    • Fill in the Blank
  7. Click Add Question to add more questions as needed.
  8. Click Done to proceed to quiz settings.
  9. In the quiz settings, configure the following options as needed:
    • Allow viewers to retake the quiz
    • Show a grade after completion
    • Allow review of correct answers and explanations
    • Block viewers from advancing in the video until they answer the questions
    • Randomize question order
  10. Click Finish, then click Apply at the top of the editor to save your quiz.
Tip: You can add multiple quizzes to a single video, placing them at different points in the timeline to check comprehension throughout.

Step 2 — Add the video quiz to Canvas as an assignment

  1. In your Canvas course, create a new Assignment.
  2. Under Submission Type, choose External Tool.
  3. Click Find and select Panopto Video from the list of external tools.
  4. In the Panopto video chooser window that opens, locate and select the video containing your quiz.
  5. Click Insert, then click Select to return to the Canvas assignment editor.
  6. Configure the assignment's point value, due date, and other settings as needed.
  7. Click Save & Publish to make the assignment available to students.
Grading: A column for the quiz automatically appears in the Canvas gradebook. Student scores are recorded there as students complete the assignment.

Why use video quizzes?

Research in learning science shows that adding interactivity to videos increases engagement and improves learning outcomes. Consider using video quizzes as low-stakes or ungraded activities to help students practice applying concepts and check their own understanding — this can reduce test anxiety and improve performance on later cumulative assessments.
