Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin College students and faculty using an Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro as part of their DExC iPad kit. Both models use replaceable plastic tips that can wear down, break, or come loose with regular use.
Resolution
Should I file an AppleCare claim for a broken tip?
No — filing an AppleCare claim for a pencil tip is not recommended. AppleCare treats a tip replacement as a pencil replacement, which uses one of your two annual repair incidents and may involve a fee. Purchasing a replacement tip pack is a faster and less expensive solution.
How to replace the tip
- Grip the worn or broken tip firmly between your fingers and unscrew it counterclockwise. If the tip has broken flush with the body, you may need tweezers or a small piece of tape to grip it.
- Thread the new tip onto the pencil clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten.
- Test the pencil on screen to confirm it is responsive.
Where to buy replacement tips
Apple sells genuine replacement tips in a 4-pack compatible with both the Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Pencil Pro. You can purchase them at:
- Apple's website — search for "Apple Pencil Tips" for current pricing and availability
- The Bowdoin College Bookstore in Smith Union
- Major retailers such as Best Buy or Amazon
Buy genuine Apple tips. Third-party pencil tips may not fit correctly and can damage the tip socket. Only use Apple-branded replacement tips to avoid voiding your AppleCare coverage.
