Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin users viewing HEIC images on a Windows computer. HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container, a space-saving image format developed by Apple and used across various hardware devices. Apple iOS and iPadOS devices running the latest software set their default image format to HEIC. Apple products can open .heic images without additional software, but Windows computers need additional software to view HEIC files.
Resolution
ImageGlass is a free image viewer that can open and display HEIC files in Windows. ImageGlass-HEIC Viewer is available for self-service install on Bowdoin-issued computers using the Company Portal app. For information about using Company Portal, see Install Software Using Company Portal on Windows in the Related Articles section.
- Install ImageGlass-HEIC Viewer from Company Portal.
- After installation, launch ImageGlass and complete the setup. We recommend not setting ImageGlass as the Default Photo Viewer.
- The application will open a default picture.
- Double-click a .heic file to display the image in ImageGlass.
