Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin-owned and Bowdoin-managed Macs running macOS Sequoia (15.x) or Tahoe (26.x) that have FileVault enabled. Use these steps only when the standard steps to reset the password of your Mac user account do not succeed.

Resolution

Start up from macOS Recovery

The startup steps differ depending on whether your Mac has an Apple silicon chip or an Intel processor. If you are not sure which one you have, see the Apple support link in the Additional Resources section below.

  • Apple silicon: Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Select the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.
  • Intel processor: Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command + R until you see an Apple logo or other image.

When asked for your recovery key

  1. Enter your FileVault recovery key. Use the FileVault Personal Recovery Key Lookup tool to access the recovery key for your Bowdoin Mac.
  2. When prompted to reset your password, click Reset Password.
  3. Select a user to reset the password for.
  4. After successfully authenticating, click Exit.
  5. Choose Apple menu > Restart.
