Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin faculty, staff, and students who are enrolling in Okta Verify but are unable to scan the setup QR code using their phone's camera. The standard enrollment process requires scanning a QR code displayed on a computer screen. If your camera is broken, disabled, or unavailable, the steps below provide an alternative method using a text message.

Resolution

Step 1: Request a setup link by text

  1. Begin the standard Okta Verify enrollment process by logging in at login.bowdoin.edu and clicking Set up under the Okta Verify option. You will be taken to the QR code screen.

  2. On the screen displaying the QR code, select Can't scan. On the next screen, select Text me a setup link.

  3. Enter your mobile phone number and click Send me the setup link.

The section under the phone number prompt is blank with the +1 country code visible. There is a blue "Send me the setup link" button visible at the bottom of the page.
  4. You will receive a text message containing a setup link. Tap the link on your phone to open it.

Step 2: Complete setup in the Okta Verify app

  1. Tapping the link will prompt you to install or open the Okta Verify app. Install the app if you have not done so already.
  2. Once Okta Verify opens, you will be asked to enter your organization's sign-in URL. Enter login.bowdoin.edu and tap Next.
  3. Sign in with your Bowdoin username and password when prompted.
  4. Follow any remaining on-screen prompts to finish enrolling your account in Okta Verify.
Note: After completing enrollment, return to your computer and refresh the browser if the login page does not advance automatically. You may be prompted to complete a verification step to confirm enrollment was successful.
