Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin community members who use, or want to try, a built-in screen reader. VoiceOver is included on Apple devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone); Narrator is included in Windows. No download or purchase is required for either.

Resolution

A screen reader describes what is on the screen and lets you navigate and control your device using the keyboard, gestures, or a braille display instead of relying on sight.

VoiceOver on a Mac

  1. Press Command + F5 to turn VoiceOver on or off. (You can also use Siri, Touch ID, or System Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver.)
  2. Use VoiceOver keys (Control + Option, shown as "VO") plus arrow keys to move through items.
  3. Open VoiceOver Utility to customize voice, verbosity, and navigation.

On iPad and iPhone, turn VoiceOver on at Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver, or set it as your Accessibility Shortcut (triple-click the side or Home button).

Narrator on Windows

  1. Press Ctrl + Windows + Enter to start or stop Narrator. Narrator is built into Windows — nothing to install.
  2. Use the Narrator key (Caps Lock or Insert) with other keys to read and navigate.
  3. Adjust voice, speed, and verbosity in Narrator settings.
Tip: The same shortcut turns a screen reader on and off, so you can try one briefly and turn it back off with one keystroke. Screen readers have a learning curve — the vendor guides below walk through the essential commands.
