Microsoft Word error: Your add-in isn't compatible with this version of Word

Issue/Question

When opening Microsoft Word in macOS you receive the following error:

Word was unable to load an add-in. Your add-in isn't compatible with this version of Word. Please contact the add-in provider for an update. (EndNote CWYYV Word 16.bundle)

Environment

This is a know issue on M1 Apple Silicon Macs with the new Universal Microsoft Word.  The EndNote Word add-in "Cite while you write" does not launch in the Universal Apple Silicon Microsoft Word version.

Resolution

Use the following work-around until EndNote updates the add-in for native M1 Apple Silicon Mac compatibility.

  1. Go to Finder > Applications > Microsoft Word.
  2. Right-click Microsoft Word, choose Get Info and
  3. Check the box Open Using Rosetta This forces Microsoft Word to launch as an Intel program and restores compatibility with the Endnote add-in.
